THE TROUBLE WITH DOUG

Music by Will Aronson
Lyrics by Daniel Maté
Book by Will Aronson & Daniel Maté

Inspired by Franz Kafka’s The Metamorphosis

“Don’t come to this remarkable and heartfelt new show expecting either Kafkaesque alienation and angst or, as I was fearing, snarky postmodern spoof. The Trouble with Doug is an original, and also rather daring in post-Osage County theatre in its focus on a family of loving, smart people who genuinely care about each other. The places Aronson and Maté take us here are constantly surprising…  Maté’s lyrics are witty and literate.”
– Martin Denton, nytheatre.com

“[A] must-see event…   There is such a dearth of viable, entertaining, thoughtful new theatre. How refreshing to have The Trouble With Doug in our own, if you’ll pardon the pun, backyard.”
-Jeffrey Bruce, Talkin’ Broadway South Florida

“Thoroughly entertaining…  Sometimes theater works even when you can’t quite explain how or why or even quite what you saw; all you recognize is that your mouth turned into a grin, your brain cells churned and you felt your throat tighten up…”
-Bill Hirschman, Florida Theater On Stage

The Trouble With Doug is ultimately neither comedy nor tragedy but a touching drama about sacrifice, coping, and, as corny as it sounds, the possibility of a better tomorrow…   [A] masterful science fiction parable.”
-John Thomason, Broward-Palm Beach New Times

THE STORY OF THE SHOW…

THE TROUBLE WITH DOUG is a touching and darkly humorous modern musical take on Franz Kafka’s short story The Metamorphosis. On the eve of his 27th Birthday, favorite son Doug Gregory transforms from a happily engaged, well-adjusted man in the prime of life into a giant talking slug. His fiancée, his doting parents, his ne’er-do-well older brother, and Doug himself all struggle to reconcile themselves and adjust to this most unexpected, inexplicable, and downright awkward turn of events. What ensues is a hilarious and surprisingly moving musical about a family facing the grim prospect of losing someone they’ve come to count on for their sense of stability, and having to re-imagine all they know about life, themselves, and each other.

Will and I started working on DOUG when we were enrolled in the Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program at NYU.  A few of our professors had suggested that Kafka might be a good fit for our sensibilities and once we took a look at The Metamorphosis, the possibilities for a modern-day riff on it just started jumping out at us…Since then we’ve been fortunate to have opportunities to work on the show at regular intervals.  The ‘trail of slime’ has taken us all the way from California to England to South Florida, and we’re excited to see where it leads next.” -DM
